If You're Not Long-Suffering, You'll Be Suffering Long

The 4th Fruit Of Spirit is:

1) Patience

Of all of the fruit of Spirit,

I believe more people struggle with this one.

That’s why we need the Holy Spirit’s help.

I recently saw it defined as:

2) Patience- to take everything in stride and not be easily offended.

Isn’t that what happens when we get impatient?

When we're impatient,  -we get easily offended -we get angry

We say:

“That idiot cut in front of me.”


Being impatient doesn’t hurt the other guy,

It hurts us.

-blood pressure rises

-headaches/ stomach aches

But, if we’re balancing the other Fruit of Spirit

(Love, Joy, Peace, Kindness, Gentleness & Self Control),

We can take things in stride

When we find ourselves getting 

angry & offended (impatient),

It’s often indicative of a time to pause.

It helps me to:

-stop & pray

-read my Bible

-get my mind off the matter


Phil 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

The #1 reason why God wants us to learn patience:

    HE is patient.

3) Growing in the Fruit of Spirit

Is all about us becoming like HIM.

If there was ever a model of patience, 

it’s God.

God uses a term to describe Himself



2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

But I really like the NKJV 


2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.


Do you know how long suffering 

God is with us?

Think how many years 

it took you to 

-get saved

-live in obedience to Him

He waited a LONG time 

for most of us.


Romans 2:4  (NKJV)

Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 

Look at God’s characteristics:


Forebearance (putting up w/ our nonsense)


What led us to repentance?

God’s Goodness

This verse says,

He did it & we didn’t even know it.

He is SO patient with us.

Our lives represent a series of lessons 

that God is trying to teach us.

He’s never done….WHY?


1. We’re a work in progress

2. He’s patient.

He sees us for the potential 

that we can achieve.

That’s what Fruit of Spirit are all about


Another definition 

7) Patience- the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, 

trouble or suffering without getting angry or upset.

I used to have a boss who threw things 

when he became upset.

Everybody avoided him.

We all know lots of impatient people.

They want it now,

They’re anxious

How many impatient people 

do you want to be like?


Today’s sermon is entitled:

If You're Not Long-Suffering, You'll Be Suffering Long


Because no one will 

want to be around you.

Patient people are the ones 

we want to be with.

The most patient people I know 

serve God.

They’re the ones who:

-don’t get flustered easily

-don’t make rash decisions

-wait on God


Eph 4:2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 

Wait a minute, Paul’s not talking about God….

He’s talking about us.

He’s telling us to be long-suffering with others.

That’s what marriage is all about


Right now, look at your spouse & say:

“Thank you for putting up w/ me”

Now, give them a kiss.

Let’s look at it in NIV


Eph 4:2  Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

When you’re patient, 

you’re bearing with one another in love.

Bearing means:

You’re not being a bear.

You’re putting up with 

someone else’s shortcomings

Why do we do it?

Because God does it for us.

The Spirit’s Presence Is: 

God Living In Us

10) God doesn’t want you to become 

      anything less than who He is.

Those are high expectations.

You will never achieve that by yourself.

It takes God.


1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
