Fruit In Your Spiritual Diet

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been studying

Fruit of Spirit

1)

Galatians 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Today, we come to our final Fruit

2) Self Control- (Enkrateia)- the mastery over one’s desires & passions

It’s interesting that Self Control

is listed last.

I believe that it is the summation

of all of the preceding virtues.

People with good self control are

Loving, joyful, peaceful, forbearing, kind & gentle people.

In order to mature as Christian,

Self control is critical.

Enkrateia refers to

Control of sexual desires.

He uses the same word in:

2.5)

1 Corinthians 7:2 But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

The world preaches sexual freedom.

The Bible teaches sexual control.

Sexual sins aren’t

any worse than other sins.

However, more people are hurt.

Sexual sins cause:

-unplanned pregnancies

-broken marriages

-broken families

-sexual diseases

-to name a few

The body of Christ

has to be different.

As such, we recognize the

Bible as God’s Word.

It’s the absolute standard

for how we are to live.

It says:

We have to maintain control

over our bodies.

That includes pornography,

which is adultery.

Jesus said:

3)

Mt 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Lust & adultery result from  a lack of self-control. Self control goes a lot further than sexual sin. It covers EVERY aspect of our lives. -eating -drinking -exercise -speech -interactions w/ others

Self control requires discipline.

That discipline may involve:

-changing your lifestyle/ friendships

-changing jobs

-having an accountability partner

-attending a support group

Paul compares it to an athlete in training

4)

1 Corinthians 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. Disqualification is what happens when  We don’t have self control. We lose our Christian witness. It’s critical that we live disciplined lives. Every one of us has a weakness. No one knows that better than satan. -If you have a problem w/ alcohol,  he’s going to tempt you w/ a drink. -If you have a problem w/ anger, he’s going to make you mad. Everyone needs to identify their weakness & prayerfully deal w/ them. You need to get ready for spiritual warfare. He’s going to  find your weak spot. He knows everyone’s weak spot. In Mt 4, Jesus was tempted 5) Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

What do you suppose would

have tempted Jesus?

6)

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

7)

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

If you want help with Self Control,

Turn no further than scripture.

Quoting scripture to satan

Makes him powerless.

Growing in self control is an

important part of your spiritual growth.

It’s a fruit that God can

help you with.

In order for God to do His part,

You’ve got to do your part.

8) It takes:

-determination

-discipline

-commitment

You’ve got to:

-surrender that area of weakness

-let God speak to you

-Speak to God

-Allow Holy Spirit grow you

God blesses that.

9)

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Let me pray for you.

Achieving a Fulfilling Prayer Life

Over the last 8 months, We’ve had a lot of time to pray. A common concern among Christians is a feeling that their prayer life isn’t effective. If you feel discouraged in this area, you’re not alone.

Real Christianity Looks Like This

In his 3 years of public ministry, Jesus was under constant attack. People were always looking for ways to discredit him. On several occasions, Jewish rabbis & scholars try to trap him, in verbal argu

Matters of the Heart

Forgiveness is a concept that Jesus frequently discussed. Yet, it’s one of the hardest teachings for us to accept. In Jesus’ time on earth, Rabbis taught  that you should forgive 3 times. Peter, wan
